By providing the highest quality hostel accommodation for homeless individuals and families, the Elizabeth Street Project represents a major change in the experience of homelessness.
The project is a direct access hostel in Burnley town centre, accepting referrals made by the Council 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Based within a grade two listed building, each customer has their own room and a licence agreement. Shared facilities include a kitchen area with four cookers, microwave, toaster and kettle. There is a large dining area with seating and a laundry area consisting of two washing machines and two dryers.
The communal area is a cosy room where residents can mingle and watch the television or a DVD, and a collection of reading material is available. In addition, all rooms occupy an en-suite bathroom, wardrobes and a small fridge.
It is recognised that customer input into how the service should be run is invaluable and a monthly meeting between staff and residents is held where policies and procedures are reviewed and ideas and activities are arranged. Previous meetings have led to a number of key policies being introduced including a Whistle Blowing Policy, which enables individuals to send text messages to a specific text line informing staff if house rules are being broken.
The Project adopts a holistic approach to support, considering the whole person. Inevitably some needs may be identified which are too specialist in nature for project staff to work on. In these instances the staff will engage with community agencies to provide more appropriate services and to access the specialist support customers may need.
