Your neighbours (reporting Anti-Social Behaviour)

Everyone has the right to enjoy their home and neighbourhood. However, sometimes people’s lives are disrupted by anti-social behaviour or disputes between neighbours.

We take a stand against all anti-social behaviour and serious issues such as racial or sexual harassment, violence, domestic abuse and threatening behaviour.

To avoid problems, here are some ways you can be a good neighbour.

  • Give neighbours advance warning of any late night parties
  • Try to keep the noise down, especially late at night or early in the morning
  • Be sensitive to the needs of families with young kids, older or disabled people, or neighbours who work late shifts
  • Don’t dump rubbish in gardens, alleyways or the street
  • Make sure your children and visitors to your home respect your neighbours.

Is it anti-social behaviour?
Here’s a quick answer: if in doubt, report it anyway.
But here are some examples of anti-social behaviour:
Noise, verbal abuse and threats, hate crimes (such as racial or homophobic harassment), nuisance from pets, alcohol or drug nuisance, criminal activity in the neighbourhood, domestic violence, untidy gardens and, of course, any physical violence at all.

Don’t get to the end of your tether
Most problems can be resolved early so tell us now and let us act. Wait to see if things improve and they may get worse.  Most anti-social behaviour doesn’t get reported. Help us change that.

What you can expect from Calico?
We will act.
Each action we take depends on the incident and its seriousness.  Visits and warning letters deal with most incidents of anti social behaviour. Only in some cases, do we have to use legal action, such as an injunction, an ASBO or an eviction. Remember, four out of five cases are thankfully resolved without legal action.

Neighbour disputes are best resolved by mediation – this is where an agency helps both parties sort out the issue.  If you can’t approach your neighbour directly, we recommend this approach.

We respond to all complaints within 24 hours and investigate them in full.  If violence or harassment is involved we’ll speak to you on the same day.

The things we might check if you come to us with a complaint:

  • Have you tried talking or speaking through an impartial mediator such as SMILE to the person causing the problem?
  • Have you contacted other agencies, such as the council’s environmental health team? If the case involves criminal activity have you contacted the police first?
  • Have you gathered any evidence, by keeping a diary of events and details of witnesses or others affected?
